Magazines: Tatler CSP case study

Introduction - Tatler Media pack

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

the editor describes how perfect the magazine is targeted to the consumers and how successful their company is by saying how the consumers love to shop,they also talk about how they have both paper magazine and the online edition so that is has an ease of access for the consumer where ever they are and what ever they are using to display the product.
2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?


Age: 29     gender: 89% female   ABC1: 90%  readers living in London: 57%
3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the pyschographic groups who read Tatler?


They have magazines about schools, spa's, travel guides, weddings, beauty and cosmetics and watches and jewellery , this shows that they want to make them suitable for all readers of all ages and interest so that they can earn more money from different audience types purchasing their products



Media language


Revise the 12 magazine cover key conventions and check how many feature on this edition of Tatler.

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?  

They use a mix of sans serif and sans, sans serif is to show authority and tradition , sans is a more modern and easier to read, as it mixes the variety of typography which makes it more immersive and more interesting.



2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?
they include name of different celebrities which can attract certain people who are familiar with them, it also give the message that their magazine is very popular and can be identified anywhere as it is published many different countries this shows that it is well known. 


3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
It shows wealthiness by the green as it may represent emeralds which is a type of gem stone, this can also be implied with the gold colour which she wears and the pearls which all symbolises wealthiness, the heavy use of make-up shows that they may use popular companies that may appear to be expensive.

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)

 It attracts people by the woman in the middle by wearing a lot of make up, another thing is the clothes she is wearing, she wears a gold dress which show that she may be wealth, the facial expression shows that she doesn't care about what people say about how she looks and that only her opinions matter to her and no one else.


Representations

1) What different groups of people are represented on the cover? (E.g. men/women/white people etc. Look at the image and text/cover lines to help here)    



It shows a white woman model, the text covers talks about other people and about fashion, this magazine is for people who are in the higher class as this magazine features specific people and not everyday celebreties.


2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
It talks about people like James Corden and in the bottom, as this magazine has a reference of a tattle (if you remove the r from tattler) it's like a gossip as it shows the lives of "rich people"  and the fashion and the thing that they usually do.



3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
How rich people spend their money only on fashion, shoes etc. in the picture the woman is wearing make up so it shows that women usually wear make up all the time and that they only care about how they look, the outfit she is wearing shows that they spend all of their money on clothing.


4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?

preferred readings of this would be that this only appeals to the female audience and that fashion and beauty are its main targets to show to younger audiences and it show so that they follow what the magazine recommends to them

The oppostitional reading would be that this is just a cash grab so that they can earn lots of money, they also try to "modernism" their magazine so that younger audiences can read them and they follow what the magazine tell them to do the wrong things and that this is really just a magazine that contains lots of gossip and lies about other people.


 Social and cultural context


1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
it shows lots of sports and clothing and accessorises that working class people would not have or do, so this implies that working class people cannot afford all kinds of fancy sports and clothing and they have specific clothing that they buy for them selves.2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?
It shows that it is targeted at higher class people who can afford lots of expensive things and for people who are well educated and want a better education.3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017? 
working class people as they probably can't afford the dresses and accessories that the people in tatler can afford like jewellery and the gold dress that the lady is wearing in the front of the magazine.4) Find three other front covers for Tatler. What issues or problems are regularly featured in Tatler?














It shows a variety of different types of things that people can do, it shows a variety of products like make-up, watches and jewellery and places to travel by showing expensive things that usually working class people can't afford as they would cost lots of money, they use expensive and well known brands that cost lots of money.





Grade 8/9 extension tasks

1) Are there any misrepresentations or under-representations of groups? What might this suggest about the target audience? They think that working class people can't afford their magazines, some working class people may be able to buy their products, but not all of them may be able to, so they make it for higher class people by adding expensive products and other items and promotions like travel guides and expensive make up or jewellery etc. 
 


2) How does the front cover engage audiences with possible narratives? Look for stories, cliffhangers, dramatic cover lines etc. An example of a narrative would be the 5th paragraph as it it is structured in a way  of a story or novel as it is very descriptive.

3) What does the costume and make-up in the central image suggest about the character featured on the front cover of the April 2017 edition of Tatler? It shows that the woman is confident as she looks directly at the audience, her outfit shows that she is wealthy as she wears an expensive dress and excessive amounts of make-up which could be expensive.
4) Read this Guardian article on the BBC documentary about Tatler called Posh People. What does the article suggest about the people who produce and read Tatler?


they show that it is for posh people as it clearly says "posh people" , they also do this by saying "terrarium is mercifully double glazed." this shows that it has been rated by people and it seems to have a good rating on it. They mention important people like Prince Williams, they also talk about expensive products, in the first paragraph it mentions a range rover, range rovers are quite expensive so it show that things that normal working class people can't afford them selves.
