Film Industry: I, Daniel Blake

1) What is independent cinema and how is it different to Hollywood blockbusters?

An independent cinema is when a certain movie is made by the director and has no collaboration with any other companies they also have a small budget and which restricts them from using too many CGI effects and not many editing effects, as a Hollywood blockbuster, for example Marvel has been acquired by Disney they are already popular and they are successful they also have a large budget and lots of CGI effects and many other editing techniques

2) What is I, Daniel Blake about?
It is about a man who has just recovered forma major heart attack and then he wants to apply for a job but his doctor recommends that he shouldn't work otherwise it will get worse, he then comes across a woman with two kids and she has no where else to stay in which if she needs to get to a place where there is a good shelter she must go to a place which is far away and to a place where she cannot travel to3) Who directed I, Daniel Blake and why is this important?
Ken Loach directed I Daniel Blake, this is important as he was know for previous times, his movies were put in newspapers saying that he was confusing facts with opinions but later on the people started to acknowledge him and started watching his movies, one time he had projected the movie on the house or parliaments in which it is an example of guerrilla
marketing .

They used an example of guerrilla marketing in which they projected the movie on the house of parliaments and projected a slogan or a quote on a wall

It made $15.8 million USD in the box office

7) How can independent films like I, Daniel Blake compete with Hollywood blockbusters like Doctor Strange?
They have a potential of being a blockbuster movie and some are and just start as an indie then turnout into a blockbuster but for the producer of i daniel blake chose not to become a blockbuster, he had the potential of being a blockbuster but decided not to be a blockbuster so that he could direct the movie from his vision and how the government is portrayed

8) In your opinion, was I, Daniel Blake a success?

I think it was as the producer chose not to be a blockbuster so that meant that he had a potential of being able to produce a blockbuster movie so that means that it could be a success even though Doctor strange was a bit of a flaw in the marvel series it still was a success.

Grade 8/9 extension tasks

Read this marketing case study on I, Daniel Blake. What does 'making a film launch a political movement' mean?
it like when a political party or something makes a change a film producer also launches the movie and they protest and they do anything to get their point around or try to show what they are trying to say or what they want or want the political group to do for them so that they can have a better life or something that simplifies their lives.

Read this Hollywood Reporter interview with executive Alex Hamilton on film marketing - including the I, Daniel Blake grassroots marketing campaign. Why was it successful?
even though it was an indie movie it was still a success because they wanted the film to be part of a blockbuster but the producer refused to become a blockbuster movie producer, if a movie was so good that a company that wants a movie to become a block buster movie must mean that it is properly made in order to become a blockbuster

Grade 8/9 extension tasks
Read this Guardian Film Blog on Doctor Strange - plus the comments below. Did audiences consider the film a success? Why?They think that is was a success but the way that the actors were placed as they needed a a certain ethnic background but the actors were way different from what the story required e.g they were supposed to have a Nepalese actor to fit its wizard but they used a different person, the consumers figured out that it would fit better.

Read this feature on whether there are too many Marvel sequels and spin-offs. Do you agree? I think there are a lot but crucial to the story line as when you watch the marvel movies in a certain order you late understand the concept of the whole sequel, this is a common move made by marvel by releasing so many sequels and spin-offs if they didn't do this then they would be unique and it makes it interesting by releasing so many sequels.

Extension:

Read this Guardian review of Doctor Strange to prepare for studying our first CSP next week. What did the Guardian think of the film?

They think that this movie is very unique a quote to prove this is "Doctor Strange is very much its own entity" (this can be found on the web page being provided) they also describe how the movie is very fascinating and it contains complex things, they talk about how unique it is by where the movie is based and how the character works and what they do, they also describe how good the editing and effects are as they say that they are very "mind-bending layers of trippy visuals" (this quote can also be found in the web page provided ).

Read this BBC feature on Marvel at 80 years old. How has it survived so long and why is the Marvel Cinematic Universe so important to the recent success of the brand?

The series started out as a comic series made by Stan Lee they included many original heroes like spider man, hulk, x-men, fantastic 4 and captain america. They later made many different comics while introducing many different characters, all comics give a backstory to the characters in the marvel universe, later they release the characters in a group to show how they work together (this usually depends on the character) later when the movie comes out it all links to the comics or the origin of the character.
