Introduction to advertising: blog task

1) What key conventions of an advert can you find and what are the connotations of each one?
The advert contains the picture, the logo, the background, the slogan and the colour scheme, the connotations for the slogan would be that their drink is very ideal for when you eat your breakfast, as in the bottom right hand corner it shows the contents of the drink and the vitamins that benefit your health, the yellow background would be so that it stands out so it is easy to spot in a shop or in a shelf.

2) For each convention, write about how this appeals to a target audience.
The picture shows a character which is a bunny which shows that this is made for kids and that it is a recommended thing that they should drink. The slogan shows that it is something that you should have while having your breakfast and the contents of the drink being shown in the bottom right corner shows that its contains healthy vitamins and minerals which help you body to function properly. The background could show that it is a product which can easily be spotted in shops when people are shopping for it this also goes for the colour scheme.

3) What is the USP (unique selling point) of the product and how do you know?
It is a hot chocolate powder in which had extra vitamins and minerals which is very good for the human body, especially for children that's why it has cartoon of a bunny which show that it is aimed at children, also another thing would be that the colour of the packaging is so that it is easy to spot in stores, it may be a hot chocolate powder but it is very nutritious for children so it is both tasty and healthy for them.

If you have completed an in-depth analysis of an advert of your choice, do some additional research into creative or powerful print advertising.

Task: Find a an example of a print advert for EACH of the following:

1) A clear brand identity

Shock’s Next Wave by Bruce Grierson: Focus and Respond ...3) An emotional connection to audience

4) An innovative or ‘different’, subversive concept (e.g the porcupine advertising VW car)

5) A foreign advert that you can understand despite the language barrier

Finally, write what the USP is for each advert.

For the first advertisment of disney, it's just the words disney so this shows that just the words or the title of the company has an easy to recognise feel towards it.
The second one is the facebook one and it shows a pill that has the facebook logo meaning that it may be some sort of drug and it is saying that facebook is an addicting website like a drug.
The third ad shows a man who is in poverty holding a glass of beer and it shows the price of the beer and the water, it shows that the water is much cheaper so its is say that if you donate that much money then you can save lives by spending a little amount of money.
The third ad is a man sitting on a bench made out of kit kat, this is from kit kats' slogan "have a break, have a kit kat" so this shows that the man is having a break on the kit kat.
The fifth ad shows the burger king logo in what seems to be a foreign language and then it says that they cant show their sign, this means that you can understand the brand despite the full version of it not being present.

Magazines assessment: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
www; -clearly revised and prepared well for the assessmet
-a good understanding of magazine conventions and the tatler csp front cover.

EBI:- further your understanding of the tatler csp front cover about the British social and cultral issues offered on the front cover

- know the difference in typography.
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the mark you achieved for each question:

Q1: 2 marks

Q2: 9 marks

Q3: 5 marks

3) Did you get any media terminology wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision:
confused with a few typography types
4) Look specifically at question 2 - pick out three points from the mark scheme that you didn't include in your analysis of the unseen Grazia magazine cover.
I need to Focus on meanings created by different elements of design and layout which is mostly effective even though it may lack clarity in some areas which is mostly relevant to the use of subject specific terminology.

5) Now look at question 3. Use the mark scheme to identify three points you could have made regarding how Tatler reflects British social and cultural values.

I can achieve this by expanding my understanding of the front cover of tatler by understanding the British social and cultural issues offered on the front cover. And I need to know the difference in typography between serif and sans serif also I should have included the picture of the woman wearing the make up and what it represents and how effective it is.

Reveal: case study blog task

Media language

1) How many of the 12 magazine cover key conventions feature on this edition of Reveal? List them with specific reference to the convention on the CSP edition of Reveal.

About 5 of them which are martheal (title of publication),cover lines, colour schemes, direct address and central image.

2) What is the font choice used on the cover and what does this choice connote?  it uses sans serif, this makes it easier to read and shows that its more modern and its more engaging with the audience.

3) How do the cover lines appeal to the Reveal target audience?

they include a variety of celebrities and some direct address as they recommend to the audience on what they should do, they include celebrities like Kelly Brook, Pete, Katie, Lauren etc. They show problems about relationships and motherhood problems.

4) What are the connotations of the Reveal colour scheme on this particular front cover? they have lots of pink, white, red, yellow and black, this makes it so when the physical copy id put on the shelves then it is easier to identify and spot from it's unique colour scheme that is used.

5) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression).

they use paparazzi photos to show what they really do in their daily life, so they show the truth of the people this is makes it more truthful by them not being ready for the picture so they don't have time to pose or put on make-up, etc this makes it more believable.

6) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Reveal? List at least three and explain the effect on audiences.

Tatler magazines use some serif, especially for their title, it show authority and culture and for the cover lines they use sans serif to show that they are modern , however for reveal magazines they use sans serif for the whole thing to show that it is a modern magazine and so that it is easier to read for them.

Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover? How are they represented in Reveal? (Positive? Negative? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)  they show everyday celebrities (celebrities that usually appear most of the time) and they use paparazzi shots to show what they actually do without setting up lighting and poses, etc. this, some are represented negatively, depending on the picture that they are in.

2) How are women represented on the cover of Reveal? Think about both images and cover lines here.

They seem to be mothers of children or are pregnant with them so they show that they may be suffering with what they are doing, it shows motherhood problems which can be complicated for them.

3) How do Reveal and Tatler represent social class? (E.g. middle/upper class and working class)

Tatler targets their magazines to higher class people as inside the magazine they show expensive things likes places to travel and expensive products that include make-up jewellery, etc. these kinds of products show that they cannot be purchased by most working class people  as their income is not as high as higher class people, whereas for more wealthy people can afford it without damaging their income.

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Reveal?
The preferred reading would be that they would want them to think that this is a normal magazine some facts about celebrities and how they live their life, they also show how to do things like taking care of your skin, etc.
They just want to help you with you life by showing you secrets and things that celebrities do in order to have a nice successful life so they want to share that information and so their reader keep interesed in what content they are making.

The oppositional reading would be that this is full of gossip and lies and they expose celebrities and want to ruin their corrier by showing bad pictures and examples of what they do and how it effects other people and they want other celebrities to fight with them so they can show the bad things that they do. they also leak dark secrets about them to the public that might completely destroy the celebrity's reputation. This also makes it so that they can be a company that celebrities can go against them.

Social and cultural context

1) What aspects of British life are reflected in Reveal? How does this compare to Tatler?

Tatler show lives of higher class people or rich people and they also make it so that magazine has a higher price to pay but for the reveal magazine they put their price to an affordable price so that any kind of class can afford their products, reveal displays lives of everyday celebrities and Tatler show models and special celebrities, for example the royal family, etc. they also display expensive products being advertised, Reveal shows things like how people can do certain activities like taking care of your skin, etc.

2) What do the cover lines in Reveal suggest about the issues and lifestyle of Reveal readers?

It talks about celebrities lives and their problems that they usually have, they talk about how certain celebrities have some secrets and lies that they don't want the public to see. They show paparazzi shots to show how they lie about things, for example it show a celebrity doing a "diet " when they are clearly eating some junk food but it also shows that you don't always need to go on a diet to look nice.

3) Find three other front covers for Reveal. What issues or features regularly appear in Reveal?

They usually contain problems about relationships, they include everyday celebrities, they always use the same format of how they layout their magazines, they have promotions, the price tag of 99p and some other things like tips on how to take care of you skin and what to use, the cover lines talk about motherhood problems that they are having as it is making their lives harder, another thing that they talk about would be relationships of how celebrities are breaking up and divorcing and how they reacted towards their fallout, another thing would be diets as on the bottom it displays the words stuff the diet swapping cardio for carbs this shows that people don't have to go on a diet in order to look like a model.

Grade 8/9 extension tasks

1) How does the front cover engage audiences with possible narratives? Look for stories, cliffhangers, dramatic cover lines etc.

They use paparazzi shots to show the truth of the celebrities they also use cover lines to hook the reader onto what the people are saying and doing, they use a wide variety of pictures of celebrities so if the reader see them then they are more likely to read about them in a magazine.

2) What are paparazzi images and why are they crucial to the front cover of Reveal?

They celebrity is exposed by them not being ready for the shot, therefore making the picture more honest to the consumers and they also show how they actually behave without the public seeing them, they are seen in a less formal manner.

3) How does the front cover juxtapose text and images to create contrast and narrative on the front cover of Reveal 18 March 2017?

it compares it with different celebrities having different problems and how they deal with it with different ways they also show that pictures of their current state and what they are doing, they show two different celebrities and how and they have a slogan saying "stuff the diet, swapping cardio for carbs" this shows that one person says that they are doing a diet but the other person says that they are doing it and sticking to their word by following their diet lifestyle. The cover lines also add an explanation and to hook on the reader so that they gain interest.

4) What do these two magazines suggest about representations of social class in the British media?

It shows that they vary from working class to higher class people for their magazine from the content, advertising and price of the magazine. Another thing would be that it is for strugglers who try to seek some kind of escape and want to break free from their life problems.
